Vetiver oil has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years.
The health benefits of Vetiver Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, cicatrisant, nervine, sedative, tonic and vulnerary substance. The essential oil of vetiver is obtained through steam distillation of its roots and its main components are alpha vetivone, benzoic acid, beta vetivone, furfurol, vetiverol, vetivene and vetivenyl vetivenate.
Vetiver and ADHD
Vetiver is known as a calming oil. In a case study, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by Dr. Terry S. Friedmann, M.D., A.B.H.M. (click for study, here), three essential oils (Lavender, Cedarwood and Vetiver) were tested on participants. All of the oils were helpful but they did not all perform the same. Vetiver and Cedarwood stood out in this study. One oft-quoted study compared the effects of vetiver and two other essential oils on children with ADHD. Children ages 6-14 were administered one essential oil at a time for 30 days. They used an inhalation device at night and inhaled the essential oil roughly three times day as needed.
The other essential oils, cedarwood and lavender, yielded significant results with improvements of 83% and 53% respectively, but the children that received vetiver had a remarkable 100% improvement in performance.
Dr. Friedman added that, “In addition, I received several letters from parents of the ADHD children stating that their behavior at home had improved for the better. In several cases, they also stated that school educators informed them that their performance was observed to improve in the classroom. The report cards in some of the subjects had reflected this improvement as well.”
Vetiver and Autism
Essential oils are becoming an increasingly used technique for treating children and individuals with autism by identifying the oils that help maintain mental acuity and focus .Essential oils can bring balance to the cellular level. The oils are natural and they do not interfere with medications that may be prescribed by the doctor. Vetiver essential oil contains high levels of sesquiterpenes which deliver oxygen to the cells in the brain which may be beneficial to children with ADHA and Autism. Vetiver oil’s soothing and restorative attributes are also responsible for stimulating the immune system and and supporting the nervous system.
